Our History

Riverside Montessori Academy's roots trace back to 1975 when Mrs. Lalitha Chandrapala, received her AMI (Association Montessori International) certification and began her first Montessori school in Sri Lanka. With a small group of 15 children, Mrs. Chandrapala's passion for the Montessori philosophy and her dedication to nurturing young minds laid the foundation for what would become a lifelong commitment to education.

In 1982, Mrs. Chandrapala moved to the United States and initially joined the Pachappa location as a teacher. Shortly thereafter, she became the school's director. Her unwavering dedication to the Montessori approach and her love for children soon inspired her husband, Mr. N. H. Chandrapala, a banker, to follow her in her dreams. Together, they transformed the Pachappa location into a thriving educational institution, where Mr. Chandrapala found his own passion for teaching and shaping young minds.

As their school flourished, the Chandrapalas expanded Riverside Montessori Academy, opening a second location on Indiana Avenue in 1994. For over 30 years, they worked hand in hand, devoting themselves to the education and nurturing of generations of students. Their deep commitment to the school was so profound that they chose to pass it on to their daughter, Dr. Amila Chandrapala, who took over the management in 2013, ensuring that the legacy of love, care, and educational excellence would continue.

Although Mr. Chandrapala passed away in 2020, Mrs. Chandrapala remains a vital presence at the schools. She continues to visit daily, offering invaluable guidance to both teachers and students. Even in retirement, Mrs. Chandrapala's influence remains strong, as she continues to play an essential role in shaping the culture and success of both campuses.

The Chandrapalas’ lifelong dedication has made Riverside Montessori Academy not just a place of learning but a cornerstone of the community. Their legacy of educational excellence and their commitment to fostering a nurturing and supportive environment continue to inspire and shape the lives of countless families.
